Oaklands Country Manor

Oaklands was founded in 1860 by Bob Hall, an English millionaire who acquired the property as a gift for his wife. Initially run as a game farm, Oaklands took its name from an Oak forest that was planted nearby to supply duiselbooms – the long poles that hitched oxen to their wagons. The property has since been owned and managed by a string of colourful characters including a clairvoyant who is said to have hosted séances on hotel’s upper floors, and a South African provincial cricket captain.

Bald Ibis Hiking Trail

Bald Ibis Hiking Trail

This trail is now classified as a wilderness trail. The mountain arises abruptly out of the north-Eastern Free State landscape, with massive sandstone kranzes on the sides. Rensburgkop is known not only for its unique location, but also as the site where the TV drama “The Mountain” was filmed, based on a true story. Raptors that breed on the mountain include Cape vultures, and crown and black eagles. Bald ibis and Aabdim storks are plentiful as well. There is abundant endemic game. The flora is very similar to that of the Drakensberg ecological zones. Some of the most majestic yellowwood trees to be seen on Free State hiking trails are found here. 25 km from Harrismith [Source]
